About Buildings + Cities
This one is for all you architecture buffs out there. Most of the podcasts on our list were focused on running a business, news from the industry and best practices to be applied in your own professional life. But we humans are curious creatures who love great ideas and art – and that’s the type of content we have here.
It is an educational podcast hosted by British architects Luke Jones and George Gingell, who discuss the history of architecture, the greatest names in the industry while covering technology and the future from time to time and making all sorts of cultural references.
The effect is a good-spirited, captivating, highly informative chat and really passionate hosts, who make you feel just as excited about the topic. 99% Invisible
Last but not least, this podcast is probably the most known one from our list and from outside the construction industry—a cherry-on-top sort of thing.
99% Invisible was started by Roman Mars as a radio programme for KALW public radio recorded in Mars's bedroom and transformed into a world-famous podcast with listeners from all around the globe, a professional studio and multiple members of staff based in different parts of the world.
Each episode talks about one design from everyday life that usually goes unnoticed but plays a crucial role in the functioning of the world (or is just extremely interesting and not talked about enough). And it can be all sorts of things from plane seats to algorithms that run our lives, ending at Sagrada Familia. The best thing about this podcast is that it beautifully shows how this almost invisible thing affects our experience and reality. Yet, after getting to know about all this, the world seems to be a bit fuller.
The host Roman Mars has a chilled presence and a great sense of humour, which along with all the extra sounds, recordings and the experts’ knowledge creates a fantastic narrative phenomenon. Thanks to both hosts’ and guests' enthusiasm for these hidden gems, the chances are that it will become your next favourite podcast, even if not directly connected to construction.
Where to listen?
Available on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and their official website (where you can also search for the episodes by the category you are most interested in – a really cool option!). A new episode is released every week!
