Health and safety compliance, tracked live across 15 sites

David Walsh Civil Engineering is a family-owned civil engineering and utility contractor based in Castledermot, Co. Kildare. Founded by David Walsh in 1988, the company delivers road construction and maintenance, flood relief and drainage schemes, public realm works and water and wastewater infrastructure across eleven counties in the east and south of Ireland, for clients including local authorities, Uisce Éireann, ESB Networks and Gas Networks Ireland. The business is accredited to ISO 45001, the international standard for occupational health and safety management, so H&S documentation sits at the heart of how its sites run. Today, 15 of those sites manage that documentation through Archdesk.

The challenge

Paper records that arrived after the work was done

Before Archdesk, the company was heavily reliant on paper for managing health and safety documentation. Records were filled in on site, made their way back to the office and were reviewed after the fact. With crews spread across many live sites at once, that meant:

  • H&S documentation created, moved and stored on paper
  • Compliance reviewed retrospectively, once paperwork made its way back from site
  • No live picture of documentation status for the Project Management team across sites ranging from small crews to major schemes

The solution

H&S documentation submitted live from site

The company moved its site H&S paperwork into Archdesk, with crews completing and submitting health and safety forms digitally from site alongside their other site forms and records. Each record lands against its project the moment it is submitted, so documentation no longer has to physically return to the office before anyone can act on it. The rollout now covers 15 sites, from smaller projects and crews through to larger sites.

The results

Visibility across every site, and far less paper

Compliance visible live, not retrospectively

The Project Management team now has much better visibility of H&S compliance across every live site. Documentation is tracked live from site as it is submitted, instead of being reviewed retrospectively once the paperwork comes back, so anything that needs attention surfaces while the crew is still on site.

Substantially less paper

The reliance on paper-based processes has been substantially reduced, and with it the printing, transporting, chasing and filing that surrounded every form.

Feedback that becomes product

Working on live construction sites, the team has passed a steady stream of recommendations back to Archdesk. The majority have either been implemented or added to the product roadmap, so the system keeps getting closer to how an Irish civil engineering contractor actually runs its sites.

Overall, Archdesk has helped us modernise our H&S processes, reduce paperwork and provide our management team with greater visibility of compliance across multiple sites. The willingness of the Archdesk team to listen to feedback and continuously improve the system has also been a major positive for us.
